Facts and myths about pedagogies of engagement in science learning

Peer Review, 7(#2, Winter Issue), 24-27

Interest in adopting "pedagogies of engagement" in science teaching has sharply increased over the last decade; a realization that teaching strategies that are consistent with research on learning must engage learners in constructing and making sense of their own knowledge. Mestre presents several facts and myths about pedagogies of engagement in science learning. Research shows that through true pedagogies of engagement--actively engaging students in constructing knowledge with adequate classroom time for refining conceptual knowledge--can create effective learning environments.
